The Financial Times reports that Arab leaders “keen to avert another Gulf war will try to convince Saddam Hussein to step down if a US-led military campaign becomes imminent.” This quote from an unidentified “Arab leader” really says it all about the need for a credible threat of force: “One option is for [Mr Hussein] to depart. He’s not thinking about it now, but it could be different when the Americans are serious about the alternative of war.” You heard it here first: there isn’t going to be a war. Three months from now, Saddam will be living in Libya, and a year from now they’ll be holding elections in Iraq.
