Making a virtue of necessity

Former State Department and Pentagon official Wayne Merry argues on National Review Online that the damage done to NATO as a result of the debate over Iraq is a good thing. Merry sees NATO as “a one-way alliance” with only Turkey and Britain keeping up their end of the bargain. He concludes that “the day had to come when America’s global responsibilities and its sense of self-worth as a nation would place it fundamentally at odds with Europe and with NATO.” I’d say that day has arrived with a vengeance.
