Islam and Marxism

Daniel Pipes has an intriguing column asking the question why the left has a soft spot in its heart for militant Islam. He suggests that leftists have somehow confused militant Islam with the proletarian vanguard called for by Marxist doctrine. I suggest that the left’s indulgence of militant Islam is a function of its self-hatred and mania for suicide. But the question is a good one, Pipes has some evidence to support his hypothesis, and Pipes’ conclusion is irrefutable: “Sept. 11 and the prospect of war against Saddam Hussein have exposed the left’s political self-delusion, intellectual bankruptcy, and moral turpitude.” The column is “Why the left is nonchalant about September 11.”
