So Far, So Good

I heard a New York Times reporter this morning who entered one of the first Iraqi towns to be liberated, just a few hours after the troops. He said that the townspeople were welcoming the soldiers and celebrating in the streets. Their joy was tempered, however, by a fear that the Americans and British might not stay, and that Saddam might come back as he did after the Gulf War. It looks like Saddam’s psychopathic older son is dead and Saddam himself dead or disabled, but the latter is not yet certain. It does appear clear that there is little central control over the Iraqi military, such as it is.
