Oil Trenches Set Afire Around Baghdad

This photo shows smoke rising around a Baghdad mosque. The smoke is partly from today’s bombing, but mostly, I think, from oil trenches encircling the city that have been set on fire, apparently to foil missile guidance systems. This seems like a bad idea, since unguided missiles will kill far more Iraqis than guided ones. My understanding is that smoke will interfere with laser-guided systems, but will have no effect on GPS systems.
