Michael Kelly: “I believe”

The death of Michael Kelly feels like the loss of a friend. As a regular reader of his when he wrote the TRB column for the New Republic, as a regular reader of his Washinton Post column, and as a regular listener to his segment on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, I admired him enormously and felt like I knew him well. He was a gifted writer, a great magazine editor, an outstanding journalist and a man of obvious integrity. His death leaves a void and serves as a reminder that intellectual courage has a role to play in our public life along with the martial courage that is so much in our thoughts at this time. Our friends at No Left Turns have provided a link to one of Kelly’s columns, a satiric masterpiece written in the style of the Apostles Creed: “I believe.” He will be missed.
