Candidate of the sad…and sad candidate

Steve Hayward has read the Star Tribune account of the Humphrey Institute symposium posted below and has written us: “Gawd! I almost thought this was a story from ‘The Onion’ when I read the sentence that this forum was the SIXTH in a series of forums devoted to examining Mondale’s political career. Is that hilarious or what? I mean, how self-absorbed can you get. . . about Walter Mondale.
“Did anyone point to his high-water mark: his declaration in the 1984 campaign that he sought to be ‘the candidate of the sad’? He confused that with being a sad candidate.”
