Islamist Demonstration in Baghdad

These photos are from the demonstration that took place in Baghdad earlier today. The demonstration occurred as many thousands of people emerged from Friday services in the city’s mosques. News reports have indicated that there were “tens of thousands” of participants. The demonstation has been labeled “anti-American” in many news accounts, but it would be more accurate, from what I have read, to call it “Islamist.” The theme of the demonstration was that an Islamic state should be established to replace Saddam’s fallen government.

The down side of democracy in the Arab world is that in many countries, a majority probably favor establishment of a theocratic, Islamist government. The Administration has taken a calculated gamble that Iraq has experienced enough secular influence to prevent radical Muslims from dominating any elected government. Time will tell whether that hope is borne out.
