“Pulitzer winning lies”

Arnold Beichman of the Hoover Institution is pleased that the Pulitzer Prize committee is considering whether to revoke the Pulitzer awarded to the infamous Walter Duranty, the New York Times’ Moscow correspondent who covered up Stalin’s crimes. To assist the committee Beichman, writing for the Daily Standard, presents a sampling of Duranty’s lies about the workers’ paradise.
There’s no doubt that, under Howell Raines, the New York Times took a major turn for the worse. But I wonder whether the Times ever was honest and bias-free enough to warrant the “paper of record” label. I suspect that, in the kind of information-rich environment we have today, the Times would never have been esteemed to that extent.
