Pawlenty Draws Notice in Washington

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports this morning that Minnesota’s Governor Tim Pawlenty has drawn national notice for his success in forcing Minnesota’s legislature to balance the state’s budget without a tax increase. Paul Weyrich, for example, says: “[Pawlenty] blows me away….He could easily be on a future national ticket.”
Minnesota Democrats are doing their best to derail Pawlenty’s popularity by planting a series of news stories that try to tar the Governor by association with the telecom industry. Attorney General Mike Hatch is widely believed to be behind the anti-Pawlenty effort. So far, Minnesota Republican officials say they don’t think the attacks on Pawlenty have gained traction with voters.
