Straussians strike Washington

Those of our readers puzzled by the sinister imputation of resonsibility for American foreign policy to a cabal of Straussians buried deep in the Bush administration may be interested in the following news courtesy of our friends at the Claremont Institute. Melanie Marlowe writes to alert us to two upcoming panels on the contribution of Leo Strauss to American politics taking place in Washington as part of the institute’s Constitution Day festivities on September 16.
Melanie writes: “As part of our annual Constitution Day celebration, we are holding some panels on the topic [of Leo Strauss and American politics]. The conference is ‘Preserving the Constitution from Enemies Foreign and Domestic: The Contributions of Leo Strauss and His Students,’ and will take place at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. on September 16. The first panel is ‘American Foreign Policy and Constitutional Government,’ and the second is ‘The Case for Limited, Constitutional Government.’
“Panelists include Charles Kesler, editor of the Claremont Review of Books, David Mason of the FEC, Steven Hayward of AEI [and author of The Age of Reagan] (cabal sponsor), Robert Reilly of the Department of Defense, Tom West of the University of Dallas, and John Lenczowski of the Institute for World Politics. Brian Kennedy, president of the Claremont Institute, and Ken Masugi, Director of the Institute’s Center for Local Government, will chair the panels. The afternoon will conclude with Dr. Harry Jaffa commenting on his personal friendship with Strauss as a student and colleague, introduced by Matt Spalding of the Heritage Foundation.
“The conference is free and open to the public, but we ask that people RSVP so we can provide adequate seating. That evening there will be a dinner with Brit Hume, recipient of the Institute’s Salvatori Prize, as the keynote speaker. For more information, call the Claremont Institute at (909)621-6825, and ask for Nancy, or visit www.claremont.org.”
