American military personnel believe that Saddam Hussein, who has not been heard from for some time, is in Tikrit. “We have clear indication he has been here recently,” Maj. Troy Smith, a deputy brigade commander, told reporters in Tikrit, Saddam’s home town. “He could be here right now.”
American officials believe that Saddam is likely influencing the recent uptick in attacks on American soldiers. Attacks on U.S. soldiers averaged 22 a day over the last week, according to the U.S. military. The attacks have resulted in American deaths at a rate of about one every two days–a low rate, even by peacetime standards, but enough to fuel headlines in American newspapers, which is Saddam’s chief objective.
