The real history of the Crusades
One can conclude from the instructive historical summary by Professor Thomas Madden of St. Louis University that our efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq indeed resemble those of the Christian Crusades: "[T]he Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression—an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands."
