Why Dean is “Iraq proof” — for now

E.J. Dionne on the “Democrats’ despot dynamics.” Dionne shows that, for purposes of the battle for the Democratic nomination, the capture of Saddam is meaningless because, to a critical mass of Democratic voters, the capture is not a significant event.
Dionne contends that “Dean may not be hurt unless there is a noticeable improvement in security in Iraq before Iowa and New Hampshire vote.” Here, I think Dionne is wrong. To a critical mass of Democratic voters, improved security in Iraq is as meaningless as Saddam’s capture.
