John Kerry may have wrapped up the nomination, but Mickey Kaus demurs, saying “stop this nomination, I want to get off.” As a Democrat, Kaus has two fears — that Kerry will lose and that he will win. He identifies four reasons why he thinks that, if elected, Kerry will be a poor president. They are (1) he “doesn’t work well with others,” (2) he has no visible political courage (he is, after all, the guy who threw away someone else’s medals), (3) “yep, he lacks vision,” and (4) he has no “fallback salesmanship,” by which Kaus seems to mean no strong ability to connect with the public.
I don’t disagree with Kaus’ bill of particulars, but my concern about a Kerry presidency is much more basic — I’m not convinced that he’s prepared to aggressively defend our country.
