A tough half week

I’ve been on the road for the past few days, visiting my older daugther at William & Mary and looking at colleges with my younger daughter. Recent events have brought home, once again, the extent to which President Bush’s re-election prospects are tied to events in Iraq over which he lacks a large measure of control. Bush can skate past the 9/11 commission (as I believe he will), preside over a non-jobless recovery (as I believe he is doing), and most likely maintain wide support even in the event of another successful terrorist attack on the homeland. But, absent the discovery of WMD, I doubt that he will be re-elected unless our troops maintain full control of Iraq without sustaining a high level of casualties. Bush has the power, it seems to me, to ensure that the first half of that equation is satisified, but perhaps not the second.
