Old Hoaxes Never Die

Reader Joe Knippenberg writes:

Today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured, without commentary, the following quotation: “I am very, very happy to announce that today, for the first time Dow is accepting full resonsibility for Bhopal. This is a momentous occasion.” -Dow Chemical spokesman Jude Finisterra, saying the company has a $12 billion plan to compensate victims of the 1984 chemical disaster.
I can’t find it online, but it’s on page B7 (the @ issue section, opposite the editorial page) of the print edition, at the top of the page, one of five “Quotes of the Week.”

The fictional Mr. Finisterra has taken on, it seems, a life of his own. Let’s hear it again for that marvelous mainstream media fact-checking. Who knows? The Dow “confession” may keep cropping up in clueless media outlets like the Journal-Constitution for years, like the plastic turkey.
