Keeping score

Helle Dale in the Washington Times emphasizes the importance of keeping the European Union’s trade embargo on China in place. The EU is scheduled to lift that embargo in June and, while Dale points to some sentiment among European politicians in favor of maintaining it, she provides little reason to believe that the key players — the French and the Germans — will resist the temptation to begin trading and currying favor with China.
Will this, then, be the outcome of President Bush’s European charm offensive — we go along with the Europeans and take a softer line on Hezbollah and Iran, while the Europeans ignore our views on China and lift the embargo?
