Of human bondage

The talented journalist Christopher Caldwell wrote until recently for the Weekly Standard, where Europe seemed to have become his beat. Now Caldwell has gone to work for the New York Times Magazine. Yesterday the Magazine published Caldwell’s long profile of the Dutch Somali immigrant politician and friend of Theo Van Gogh, Ayaan Hirsi Ali: “Daughter of the enlightenment.” This is a long piece, but once you start reading it’s hard to stop. The piece is both riveting and mortifying.
