The Boston Herald headline requires remarkably little elaboration: “Harvard pledges diversity: Summers tries to make up with $50m kiss.” The Herald article provides the interpretive key to the story with a quote from Professor Faust: “The $50 million commitment represents ‘earnest money’ for the most pressing issues, said Drew Gilpin Faust, dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study…”
We’ll have to come back to this story when time allows. For the moment, I’ll limit myself to this observation. Tom Wolfe makes a compelling case for the realistic novel in the university setting of I Am Charlotte Simmons, but I wonder if a novel along the lines of I Am Professor Faust might not exceed even his gifts.
