Higher education

The new issue of Policy Review carries the excellent review/essay by Peter Berkowitz of an important book by University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Donald Alexander Downs. Professor Downs’s book is Restoring Free Speech and Liberty on Campus and Berkowitz’s review is “Educating the university.”
Professor Downs was a Cornell undergraduate in the spring of 1969 when the Cornell administration wrote the book on the surrender of university governance to the forces of illiberalism. It looks like his 1999 book on the subject — Cornell ’69: Liberalism and the Crisis of the American University — was a warm-up for his current book.
