The limits of fluidity

In my post yesterday discussing how the Washington Nationals have risen from the ashes of the Montreal Expos, I suggested that baseball seems more fluid than it was 40 years ago. I was mindful, though, that it’s still possible to play sub-500 ball year-after-year, and thought specifically about the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Reader Ted Smith, proprietor of the Fighting Titan blog, responded to my post with a bittersweet account of what it’s been like to be a Bucs fan, starting with the heartbreak of the early 1990s and descending into 12 straight years of losing ball.
While you’re visiting, check out the rest of Ted’s fine new blog including his thoughts on Canada where he lived as a teenager.
