“In the public interest,”

the Washington Times editorial board treats us to the highlights of Michael Barone’s introductory essay to the 2006 edition of the Almanac of American Politics.
Barone observes that “the 2004 [presidential] results showed the red states getting redder and the blue states getting less blue.” I wonder whether this phenomenon was related to another of Barone’s observations – that the Republicans had 1.4 million volunteers, six times as many as the Democrats. Relying on paid workers to get out the vote, perhaps the Democrats concentrated their efforts on “purple states,” while the Republicans matched the Dems in these states and ran circles around them elsewhere.
