News and Commentary

Power Line is roughly analogous to the op-ed section of a newspaper. What we do here is basically commentary. People sometimes ask us why we aren’t “covering” a particular story. The fact is that there are a great many stories we don’t talk about, not because they aren’t important, but because we don’t have anything original to say about them. Or maybe there weren’t enough hours in the day to get to them. The death of hundreds of Iraqis in a religious procession on a bridge a couple of days ago is a good example. It was a terrible tragedy, about which we had nothing useful to say.
Our readers are looking for sharp commentary, but more broadly than that, they are generally avid consumers of the news. Often, you just want to be up to date on what’s happening in the world. It was to fill this gap that we created Power Line News, site you can go to any time to catch up on the latest news, as well as commentary. As of this morning, we have added a breaking news feed to the site that updates more or less continuously, drawing from a number of news sources, some well-known, some not. So with one click, at any time of the day or night you can be up to the minute on what’s happening around the world. We also are still carrying the Fox and Yahoo “Headline News” feeds, that carry the day’s main stories and don’t change constantly. As well as RSS feeds from ten of the most popular center-right blogs, a stock ticker, Chris Muir’s Day By Day cartoon, news aggregated by category (sports, business, etc.), stock market information, and links to dozens of newspapers around the world, all in English.
At a glance, you can see the latest news from the world, and the latest commentary in the blogosphere. Not a bad combination!
Many readers have given us helpful input on the site as we’ve been getting it up and running, and we’ve implemented a number of their suggestions. By far the most common complaint has been load time. Our technical partner has taken a number of steps to speed up load times, and it’s much, much faster now. If you haven’t tried the news site lately, check it out. One tip: Like most sites, it loads faster in any browser other than Internet Explorer.
We have more enhancements coming soon, so stay tuned.
