The continuing adventures of Stephen Hayes

In the new issue of the Weekly Standard Stephen Hayes provides an update on the continuing frustration of his efforts to secure the release of unclassified documents recovered in Iraq: “Down the memory hole.” Subhead: “The Pentagon sits on the documents of the Saddam Hussein regime.” In its bureacratic absurdity, Hayes’s story is Kafkaesque. Hayes simply concludes with the mystified question “Why?”

Hayes refrains from suggesting the answer here, but the answer is related to the biggest story of the day: The war of the bureaucracy against the Bush administration, and the administration’s reluctance to fight back. This is a story that is lying in plain view, waiting to be told. It is the scandal that has yet to find its Woodward and Bernstein. Why, indeed.
