Another Good Speech

The Democrats tried to distract from the substance of President Bush’s speech by planting Cindy Sheehan in the House chamber tonight–she was reportedly the guest of a Democrat Congresswoman–but Justice Samuel Alito’s presence in the chamber was much more significant. Plus, he lasted longer, as Sheehan was hauled out of the chamber when she tried to unfurl a banner. She is clinging tenaciously to her fifteen minutes. On to the »

Jessica Rachel McMaster, RIP

Scott Ott — a/k/a ScrappleFace — pays tribute to his grandmother who raised him and passed away last night or early this morning: “Woman who coined ‘ScrappleFace’ passes away.” Scott adds: “This is not satire.” Our condolences to Scott. »

It’s a Long Book, But Still…

Many observers have noted that lack of knowledge of military affairs is an Achilles heel for the liberal media. It occurs to me that lack of scripture knowledge may be in the same category, after seeing two rather humorous stories today. First, Senator Sam Brownback quotes Jesus, and gets accused of an anti-gay slur: Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, a potential presidential candidate, said Monday he meant no offense to homosexuals »

Alito confirmed

The Senate has confirmed Samuel Alito by a vote of 58-42. Four Democrats (Byrd, Conrad, Johnson, and Ben Nelson) joined 54 Republicans (all but Chafee). The margin exceeded my low expectations by a few votes due, I think, to the quality of Alito’s performance before the committee and the desperate performance of the committee Dems. This was basically a straight party line vote — 90 percent of the Democrats voted »

Filibust Post Mortem

Deborah Orin dissects the Democrats’ failed filibuster attempt in today’s New York Post: Republicans loved 2004 loser Kerry’s flop of a filibuster against Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito because it had Democrats tearing each other’s eyes out »

Tripping up on junk, take 2

On Sunday in “Tripping up on junk” we debunked the New York Times/ABC sliming of Justice Scalia and the Federalist Society. Today the Washington Times devotes an editorial to the subject: “Probing ABC’s Scalia probe.” »

Glory days

Yesterday we noted Michael Barone’s proposition that Democrats seemed to be stuck in the seventies with failed reruns of the scandals of yore. Today Stephanie Mansfield finds a gathering of the clan seeking to relive the glory days of the sixties: Liberal activists — among them graying leftovers from the Vietnam-era antiwar movement — plan to gather near the Capitol tonight, banging pots and pans to drown out President Bush’s »
