Islam’s imperial dreams

On Tuesday I noted that Efraim Karsh is the young scholar of Middle East history who may fill the very large shoes in which Bernard Lewis has been standing for the past two generations. I now discover that the Wall Street Journal column that prompted my comment about Karsh was based on the longer version of Karsh’s essay in the new issue of Commentary: “Islam’s imperial dreams.” The Commentary essay is based in turn on Karsh’s book Islamic Imperialism: A History, to be published by Yale University Press next week.
