Good catch by Real Clear Politics. They looked up Senator Mel Martinez’s position on immigration when he was running for office, and found that it was very different from the legislation he is now co-sponsoring.
Of course, that was a long time ago. 2004.
I can’t explain why it is that Senators and Congressmen so often vote differently from how they campaigned. Maybe there is a clue, though, in the fact that the movement always seems to be in the same direction. When was the last time someone ran as a liberal and then voted conservative?
