The concept of natural law has a long history in our political and philosophical tradition. The Founders often invoked “the laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” The Islamists, of course, have their own concept of natural law:
Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal says Palestinians have a “natural right” to carry out suicide bombings. The leader of the militant Islamic movement told Syrian students that suicide attacks against Israel are an act of self-defence.
I don’t think that’s quite what Thomas Jefferson had in mind.
