Remembering Professor Wood

Paul’s speech names the wonderful Dartmouth teachers whom he credits for his intellectual redemption, prominently the late, great and greatly missed Charles T. Wood. Professor Wood was originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, where he graduated from St. Paul Academy. He continued his studies at Harvard (through his Ph.D.), where he played center for the Harvard football team and where he cultivated his love of medieval history. Gladly would he learn, and gladly teach. Paul’s post elicited the following message regarding Professor Wood from Laura Blanchard:

Charlie Wood and I worked together closely on a small scholarship fund until about six months before his death. I miss him very much and was happy to see him mentioned on Power Line today, especially his trademark patience.

Because Charlie’s interests were so very far-ranging, the traditional Festschrift would not have worked for him, so on the occasion of his retirement his colleague Bonnie Wheeler and I organized several sessions of papers at the International Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo — and created an online festschrift, which you may see here.
