The president visits Baghdad

President Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq today to meet with newly named Prime Minister al-Maliki. He is expected to remain in Baghdad for about five hours. The visit follows up on two recent U.S. successes — the slaying of Zarqawi and progress in naming a new Iraqi government.

The Associated Press Reports that the new Prime Minister reportedly greeted the Bush enthusiastically (and why not). According to the AP, al Maliki didn’t know Bush was in Baghdad until five minutes before they met. The trip was known only to a handful of aides and a small number of reporters sworn to secrecy because of security issues.
