Let the devil take tomorrow

Israel’s failure to defeat Hezbollah will have convulsive political consequences within Israel. It is difficult to imagine how Prime Minister Olmert and his cabinet can avoid the blame that will be attributed to it for the outcome of the war. Israel Insider has posted a column by Jonathan Ariel that shows the allocation of responsibility has begun in earnest: “Government and IDF racked by unprecedented leadership crisis.” As does the Haaretz column by former Israeli defense minister Moshe Arens “Let the devil take tomorrow.” Ari Shavit’s Friday Haaretz column was to the same effect: “Olmert cannot remain in the prime minister’s office.” (Thanks to readers Grace McLoughlin and William Katz.)
