This story in South Carolina’s The State newspaper explains the role of Sen. Lindsey Graham in preventing an up-or-down vote on Jim Haynes’ nomination to the Fourth Circuit. As The State puts it, if the blockage of Haynes’ nomination “were probed like a homicide investigation, Graham’s fingerprints would be on the gun.”
I agree with Jonathan Adler at NRO’s Bench Memos that it’s not Graham’s opposition to Haynes that is so distressing; it’s Graham’s “apparent role in preventing Haynes from receiving an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor,” something Graham said during his Senate campaign that all nominees should receive. Also disturbing is the fact that Graham has not been honest enough to admit his role in blocking Haynes.
