India Blames Pakistani Intelligence for Train Blasts

Indian authorities have arrested four more suspects in the July train bombings in Mumbai that killed nearly 200 people. Mumbai’s police chief gave a press conference in which he blamed Pakistanis and the Pakistani intelligence service, ISI, for the plot:

On Saturday, Mumbai’s police chief said his team had cracked the case and found solid evidence as a result of what he called one of India’s biggest and most widespread investigations.

“We have solved the July 11 bombings case. The whole attack was planned by Pakistan’s ISI and carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba and their operatives in India,” A.N. Roy, Mumbai’s police chief, told a news conference.

Some of the Indians who were involved in the attack and are now in custody (presumably Muslims) reportedly had visited Pakistan and had been trained in terror tactics by a terrorist group based in Pakistan.

I have no idea, of course, whether the Indian authorities’ charges about ISI are true or not. But the Pakistani intelligence service has long been regarded as a rogue agency, notorious for its support of the Taliban and perhaps other terrorist groups. With Musharraf apparently preparing to retire, ISI’s questionable loyalties could become a more important issue than ever.
