Republicans are mean stupid losers, Part Two

Howard Fineman writes Howard Meyerson’s piece, minus the intellectual pretension and/or inferiority complex. Fineman breathlessly reports that the Republicans are set to run a “fear is good” campaign in which the object to be feared is Nancy Pelosi. Indeed, says Fineman, poor Pelosi had better “prepare for what Karl Rove and the GOP have in store: an all out, coast-to-coast assault.”

Fineman is reputed to be an intelligent guy so presumably he understands that (1) if the Democrats gain control of the House, Pelosi’s power will increase spectacularly, (2) if the Democrats do not gain conrol of the House, President Bush will have more power, and an easier time of it, than if the Dems prevail, (3) the proper object of any campaign is to explain to voters the likely consequences, including negative consequences, of the election’s possible outcomes, (4) it is therefore neither surprising nor unfair that the Democrats are going to run a campaign much of which will be devoted to explaining what they perceive to be the negative consequences of President Bush retaining the power he now has or increasing that power, (5) it is similarly neither surprising or unfair that the Republicans are going to run a campaign much of which will be devoted to explaining what they perceive to be the negative consequences of a substantial increase in Nancy Pelosi’s power, and (6) it is unfair to characterize the Republican approach described in point 5 as any more of a “fear is good” campaign than the Democratic approach described in point 4.

As I say, Fineman almost surely understands these points. Thus, his column should be viewed as a hit-piece written on behalf of the Democrats, and nothing more.
