Can McCain Win?

John McCain is always identified as the front-runner for the GOP Presidential nomination in 2008. It is no secret that McCain is more popular with the media and with independents than with the GOP’s rank and file; yet McCain calls himself “a proud conservative,” and I’ve always thought that his record, taken as a whole, justifies that label. Moreover, he has been solid on the biggest issue of our time: the global war on terror.
So I’m surprised at the extent to which conservative activists really don’t like him. To see what I mean, check out this topic thread on the Power Line Forum, and weigh in if you feel like it. If McCain can’t do better than this with conservatives, is there any way he can win the Republican nomination?
