With Friends Like This…

This ties in directly with Paul’s post immediately below, especially the last paragraph of Jim Addison’s Forum post.
Earlier today, Rahm Emanuel and his fellow Democrats held a press conference to talk about ethics reform. Ordinarily, a real snoozer. But not today: they were disrupted by a bunch of antiwar activists led by Cindy Sheehan. It is truly chilling to hear these crazies chanting like a bunch of zombies; here is the report from Fox News:

I think you had to be there in the 60s and early 70s to fully appreciate the damage the antiwar movement did to the Democratic Party. The party, in fact, has never entirely recovered. The Democrats had an ambiguous relationship with the anti-American activists of that era. The activists focused their ire mainly on the Democrats–think Chicago 1968–but at the same time, they largely made their home in that party. The idea that history might be repeating itself must appall the Democrats’ leadership.
One of the Democrats’ problems during the Vietnam era was the fact that many Democrats came across as wimpy and indecisive in their responses to illegal and antisocial conduct by antiwar protesters. Recalling that history, Democrats who watch Emanuel Rahm in this video can only shudder. Rather than deal forcefully with the protestors, Rahm yielded the field to them and retreated inside the building.
I sincerely hope this is not a portent for the future.
