Joel Mowbray reports: Congress set to act against USAID

Following up on his page-one Washington Times story on American support for two Palestinian universities friendly to terrorism, Joel Mowbray ([email protected]) has filed the following report:

Judging by the words of the most influential House member in foreign policy, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos, the U.S. Agency for International Development might soon have to stop its practice of funding Palestinian universities that engage in the support, advocacy, or glorification of terrorism.
In the first of two congressional hearings on Thursday — both were planned some time ago — Lantos delivered a strong opening statement, taking USAID to task for not being forthright with Congress about its funding decisions in the West Bank and Gaza:

“Had you entered into a dialogue with Congress, we would have told you, for example, that providing U.S. assistance to a terrorist-controlled university in Gaza was out of the question and, in fact, violates U.S. law. According to news reports, USAID transferred large sums of U.S. taxpayers
