Mind boggling

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) reports that a college professor is on the verge of being fired for emailing George Washington’s Thanksgiving Day address to his co-workers last Thanksgiving. The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) has placed tenured math professor Walter Kehowski on forced administrative leave and has recommended that he be terminated for this “offense.” Kehowski also sent a link to Pat Buchanan’s web page, where he had found Washington’s speech.
It was the Buchanan link that apparently got the professor into trouble. Some recipients complained that this amounted to harassment given Buchanan’s views on immigration. Astonishingly, the college district bought this argument, and found Kehowski in violation of its rules against employment discrimination.
According to FIRE, the same email system Kehowski employed has been used to send messages about issues with no more educational value than Buchanan’s blog, and considerably less value than George Washington’s address. These topics include an advertisement for purchasing goats for orphans in Uganda, quotes about Women
