Joachin Andujar once said he could summarize baseball in one word — youneverknow. The same is true of soccer. On Sunday, the U.S. defeated Mexico 2-1 in the Gold Cup final. Tonight, a watered-down Mexican squad (no Pardo, Salcido, Osario, or Guardado) beat Brazil 2-0 in the opening round of Copa America. Brazil played its first team except for superstars Ronaldinho and Kaka, who are taking the summer off after very long and taxing seasons in Spain and Italy, respectively.
Brazil was poor in the first half, but launched a sustained all-out attack in the second half that, with better luck, could have produced four goals. All Brazil needed was Benny Feilhaber.
Tomorrow night, the U.S. takes on Argentina.
