Miss World: The Finale

The finale of the Miss World pageant was held last night in China. More than two billion people were said to have watched the telecast. Miss China, who became the betting favorite after winning the Top Model competition, was crowned Miss World. The pageant site’s account of last night’s event is here:

Miss Angola, one of my favorites, was the first runner-up:

Second runner-up was Miss Mexico:

The third and fourth runners-up, Miss Sweden and Miss Trinidad and Tobago, were both upsets, I think:

Miss Sweden was hard to handicap prior to the contest since, in keeping with the selective prudishness that characterizes Sweden these days, she didn’t submit a swimsuit photo. The fact that I overlooked Miss Trinidad and Tobago can be explained only by overwork.
That’s it for international pageantry until July, when the Miss Universe contest will be broadcast from Vietnam.
