I’ve just spoken to friends who are on the ground in Des Moines. They had several observations. First, it’s a beautiful clear day. The snow has been shoveled and the roads are quite passable, so turnout should be substantial by Iowa caucus standards. Second, Huckabee looks strong at the grassroots level — e.g., a fair amount of lawn signs in working class areas, lots of bumper stickers on pick-up trucks. Third, Clinton seems to be very strong among Democratic women, but many of them are unlikely to leave the kids to go caucus. In many cases, the husband supports Edwards, but will make Hillary their second choice if the wife can’t make it.
Keep in mind this report comes from a working class part of Des Moines. Obama reportedly is very strong in Iowa City, where he’s all the rage with students and intellectuals.
