What I thought I knew

In her omniscient narrative voice, George Eliot says in Middlemarch that prophecy is the most gratuitous form of human error. It is an insight on which I have recently had occasion to reflect.
I have thought for most of the past year-and-a-half, for example, that the Clintons are a force of nature not to be denied, that Senator Clinton would roll to the Democratic nomination, that Senator Obama’s vacuity would deprive Obama of a substantial audience among Democratic voters, that a Clinton-Obama ticket was virtually foreordained, and that the Democratic ticket would sweep to victory in the national election this coming November.
So far, you can put me down as a remarkably reliable negative indicator. I’m hoping only to maintain a perfect record of prophetic failure through election day in November.
