Huckabee channels Nixon

A few minutes ago on FOX News Sunday Mike Huckabee regurgitated the bogus Lincoln quote in support of Huckabee’s proposed remolding of the Republican Party: “God must have loved the common people, he made so many of them.” I’m sure other Republican politicos have used the quote over the years, but Richard Nixon used it best in his cannily bathetic Checkers speech in 1952. In Huckabee’s case I guess it beats his attribution of the wisdom of Michael Corleone to Sun Tzu.
George Will describes Huckabee’s faux populism as “a compound of Uriah Heep, Elmer Gantry and Richard Nixon” that can be observed as he “preens about his humble background.” Huckabee’s pious invocation of the bogus Lincoln quote perfectly illustrates Will’s description. Will notes that Huckabee characterized his Iowa win as a Christian miracle. Will himself fashions a passble variation of the Gospel of John as well as the bogus Lincoln quote in mocking Huckabee: “God so loves Huckabee’s politics that He worked a Midwest miracle on his behalf?”
