Let’s Hope They Keep It Up

It’s hard not to enjoy the latest dust-up between the Clinton and Obama camps. The Clinton campaign has been circulating a photo of Obama that was taken when Obama visited Kenya in 2006. It shows him in a Somali outfit of some kind:

According to Drudge, at least one Clinton staffer circulated the photo with comment, “Wouldn’t we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?” Actually, I think not.
The Obama camp responded angrily:

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe immediately accused Clinton’s campaign of “the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we’ve seen from either party in this election.”
Obama’s foreign policy adviser, Susan Rice, said the circulation of the photograph was divisive and suggests “that the customs and cultures of other parts of the world are worthy of ridicule or condemnation.”

Interestingly, the Clinton campaign did not deny circulating the photo:

“Enough,” [Maggie] Williams said in a statement. “If Barack Obama’s campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.
“This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry.”

Ms. Williams has developed a fine ear for Clinton-speak. From our perspective, we can only hope that such low-comedy sparring between the Democratic campaigns continues all the way to the convention.
UPDATE: This is really too much. The Associated Press is now headlining: Clinton fury over Obama photo claims. Before long, they’ll have Obama apologizing for having brought the whole thing up in the first place.
