The goal that kept Everton up

Yesterday was a nervous day for Everton fans, as our boys fought for the point that would ensure participation in the Europe next year. But that was nothing compared to the agony of past years, in which our survival in the Premier League was still in doubt on the final day. Here’s is the wonder strike against Coventry City by obscure midfield Gareth Farrelly that kept us up ten years ago.

This was the only goal Farrelly ever scored for Everton in regular league play, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t score in the Premier League for any of his other clubs. But considering the quality and the occasion, this one was worth at least 20. The celebration afterwards says it all.

Farrelly is in intensive care right now as the result of illness. We hope he recovers soon.

UPDATE: The video provides a glimpse of two Everton legends: Duncan Ferguson, who sets up Farrelly, and Howard Kendall, a star on the great Everton teams of the 1960s and the manager of the great teams of the 1980s.
