The Democrats' Mortgage Scandal Continues
We haven't written much about the embarrassing ties between certain Senate Democrats and Countrywide Financial that have come to light. My first reaction to the scandal was that it was much ado about very little, since the preferential treatment the Senators received was minor, if it existed at all. Still, there is no good explanation for why someone like North Dakota's Kent Conrad would go to a "fixer" like Jim Johnson, and from Johnson to Countrywide's Chairman, Angelo Mozilo, to get a routine mortgage. Conrad was classified as a "VIP" by Countrywide, and did receive preferential treatment.
This story has mostly died out in the national media, but a local television station in North Dakota did a story that includes an interview with Conrad. If nothing else, the interview has considerable entertainment value:
