Hank Cochran wrote “She’s Got You” for Patsy Cline. Everyone involved including Cochran knew it would be a huge hit for her, as it proved to be in the aftermath of “Crazy.” I like Don McLean’s version of the song even more than Cline’s. (Listen to Cline’s version here.) As is his custom in covering familiar songs, McLean slows down the tempo to explore the underlying feeling of the song. In his cover of “She’s Got You,” McLean finds an undertone of anger. The anger may be elicited by the mediocrity of the musicians accompanying him in the video above, but fasten on McLean’s interpretation of a great song.
