Who “Won” Saddleback? NY Times Says McCain

The Times doesn’t actually come out and say it, of course. But the paper evidently thinks that their guy’s inferior performance needs to be explained. Hence today’s spin: Despite Assurances, McCain Wasn’t in a ‘Cone of Silence.’

So, does that mean that McCain heard the questions as Rev. Warren asked them of Barack Obama? No, it means that he was in his vehicle en route to the church, as opposed to being in a $64,000 question-style isolation booth.

What’s interesting about this is the Times’ apparent assumption that you can’t give a succinct, responsive answer to a question unless you’ve got the question in advance and have time to think about it. Here’s another possibility: some politicians respond to questions with evasive rambling, while others don’t.
