So far, the Democrats’ over-the-top attack on Sarah Palin doesn’t seem to be working. The current Rasmussen poll shows John McCain moving out to a three-point lead. I’d guess the Democrats’ own polling is showing the same thing; hence the current disarray in the Obama camp.
UPDATE: Are the Democrats melting down across the board? This Gallup poll is no doubt an outlier, but it shows the Democrats’ generic Congressional preference advantage down to three points. If that is anywhere near correct, it represents a stunning reversal. Maybe voters have finally figured out that it’s the Democrats who have been running Congress for the last 20 months.
PAUL adds: Gallup says, “if these numbers are sustained through Election Day — a big if — Republicans could be expected to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.†It seems unlikely that the Republicans will regain control of the House, though nothing that happens in this election cycle would be completely shocking any more. But it may now be realistic to think that the Democrats’ margin in the House will shrink rather than expand, as most have been assuming will occur.
A reduced Democrat margin would be salutary, not just in terms of head-count but also because of the sobering effect it probably would have on the Dems. If Obama is elected, individual members in contested districts might be less quick to support liberal legislation. If McCain is elected they might be less quick to obstruct the president. And, if there is no sobering effect, the odds of a Republican takeover in 2010 will be enhanced.
